As its titles implies, this anthology examines chapel decorations in Italy from the twelfth to the eighteenth centuries, emphasizing issues of artistic style, patronage, circumstances of each commission, the significance of the choice of the subject matter, and iconography. It does not pretend to be the definitive book on chapel decoration in Italy as the subject is too extensive to cover in only one text. It does, however, provide enough material for readers to identify the patterns followed by patrons and artists in establishing and decorating these spaces that became the public manifestation of devotion, social status, and, in some cases, political clout. In recognizing these patterns, one may gain further knowledge of the forces behind the production of religious art, as well as of the culture that fashioned these sacred settings.

The religious inclinations and moral values of the individuals or corporate entities that established the chapels discussed in the text are also revealed. The book is divided into four sections, each dealing with a particular region in Italy, beginning with the north and moving its way down the peninsula to reach the south.
