[…] The Princeton conference could be portrayed as focusing exclusively on the medieval period (albeit also in relation to twenty-first-century visions and visionaries in a number of essays), and as having a disciplinary emphasis on history and art history in particular.

The subject of visions is a huge one, and no matter how inclusive we attempted to be, some of the better-known exemplars - such as the dreams of Dante…, Mordecai… Pharaoh… - could not be included… although the essays in this volume range over several centuries and continents, we have simply touched the tip of a very big iceberg.
