The Story of Athens: The Fragments of the Local Chronicle of Attika Edited and translated by Phillip Harding The Atthidographers were a series of historians who chronicled the local history of Athens. From the end of the fifth century to the middle of the third several authors wrote Atthides and their works have survived only in fragments (about 300 in all, many of which are crucial sources of information for the ancient historian. The Story of Athens represents a unique combination of oral and written traditions of Attika, the land of Athens, from mythical to historical times, written in chronicle form. This is the first time that the fragments of all the Atthidographers have been made available in an accessible translation for the use of students and teachers. The fragments are presented in chronological order (rather than author by author), so as to aid the reader in visualizing the shape of the Athenian Chronicle. With an introduction that situates the genre in its biographic context and commentary throughout, this book explores Athenian religion and cults, political history, military events and much more through the extant fragments of the Athenian chroniclers.
