The Palestinian Arab In/Outsiders : Media and Conflict in Israel
The Arabic media map in Israel has been shaped in the shadow of the bitter conflict between Israel and its neighbours. Since most of the Jewish majority has considered the Arab minority a potential enemy of Israel, the government considered it critical to establish civilian control over them. Thus, overseeing the Arabic media was viewed a part of the ongoing relationship between the two communities and, particularly, as one of the numerous mechanisms for dismembering the collective identity of the Arab minority.

Over the years, the Arabic press in Israel gradually liberated itself from the formal regulations imposed upon it, and is now playing an increasing role in reconstructing Palestinian identity. Professor Mustafa Kabha is a researcher and senior lecturer in history and communication at the Open University of Israel and Tel Aviv University. His most recent book is: The Palestinian Press as Shaper of Public Opinion 1929-1939 (London and Portland, OR: Vallentine Mitchell, 2007).

Professor Dan Caspi is the former chair of the Department of Communications Studies and Head of the Hubert Burda Center for the Innovative Communications at the Ben Gurion University of the Negev (2004-09). He served as the first founder char of the Israeli Communication Association (1995-98) and filled several public roles. He has written and co-authored several books, most recently with Hanna Adoni and Akiba A. Cohen, Media, Minorities and Hybrid Identities (Cresskill, NJ: Hampton Press, 2006).
