Higher Education in Europe and the United States of America: A Divers Collection of Essays Henry Wasser with Solidelle Fortier This is an assemblage of papers presented at conferences in the Netherlands, France, Belgium, Portugal, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Germany and the United States. They analyze such topics as structure; corporatization of universities; changing boundaries between public and private higher education legitimacy and crisis; role of academic leaders and university trustees; economic development; impact of universities on the community; and the political and social impact of universities. The essays continue a fairly comprehensive international review of major issues now confronting universities. They represent the view that this may well be a qualitative change in the long history of universities and that the interplay between society and university may be more intricate and mutually affective than ever before. Henry Wasser is Professor Emeritus at City University of New York and a Fulbright Professor at the University of Thessaloniki in Greece, the University of Aveiro in Portugal, and the Universities of Bergen and Oslo in Norway, where he is also the director of the American Institute. He is the author and editor of books and articles on American literature, Henry Adams, and higher education policy in Europe and the U.S. Solidelle Fortier is a Senior Economist for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and adjunct lecturer at the University of Oslo in Norway, C.U.N.Y, and Fordham University in New York. She is the author of essays on Thorstein Veblen and the U.S. economy.
